Gentle vision care for kids of all ages.

Your child’s eyes play a key role in how they learn, grow, and experience the world. At Ever Square Eye Clinic, we provide pediatric eye exams that are tailored to your child’s age and needs.

Dr. Abdo Kattan holds a Master’s in Pediatric Optometry and sees children as young as newborns, using age-appropriate tools and a calm approach.

When Should My Child Have an Eye Exam?

The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends regular eye exams starting in infancy. Many vision issues in children develop quietly, without obvious symptoms. Here’s a general timeline to follow:

  • First exam: Between 6 and 12 months of age

  • Second exam: Around age 3

  • Annual exams: Once your child enters school

Regular eye exams help us track how your child’s vision is developing, identify concerns early, and support their learning.

The Importance of Early Eye Exams

Most of what children learn happens through their eyes, so when vision isn’t working properly, it can affect everything from focus and behaviour to reading and classroom participation. The challenge? Kids rarely know when something is wrong with their sight. Even if your child has passed a school screening or hasn’t complained of symptoms, they may still have a vision problem that requires professional attention.

What Happens During a Pediatric Eye Exam

We know that visiting the eye doctor in Edmonton can feel intimidating, especially for little ones. Dr. Kattan brings advanced training in pediatric optometry and years of experience helping children (and parents) feel relaxed during their visit.

Every child is different, and so is every exam. We tailor your child’s visit to their age, development, and comfort level. For infants and toddlers, we use non-invasive tools and observational assessments to check that their eyes are developing as expected. For older children, we incorporate interactive vision tests and discuss any school, screen, or sports-related concerns.

Our care is available in English, Arabic, Spanish, and Catalan, so you can communicate in the language that makes your family feel most comfortable.

Children's Vision Conditions We Screen For

Pediatric eye exams do more than determine if your child needs glasses. We also check for signs of common, and often hard-to-spot, vision issues, including:

Refractive Errors

These vision issues affect how clearly your child sees objects at different distances. We check for blurry vision, squinting, or difficulty with reading and classroom tasks.

Amblyopia & Strabismus

Conditions like a “lazy eye” or eye turn can cause long-term vision issues if left untreated. We use non-invasive testing to assess how your child’s eyes work together.

Focusing & Eye Tracking

Some children struggle to maintain steady focus or to follow lines of text. These challenges aren’t always picked up in school screenings but can impact learning and behaviour.

Delayed Visual Development

Every child’s eyes develop on their own timeline, but some delays may need closer monitoring. We assess how your child’s vision is progressing, especially in early infancy and toddlerhood.

From baby’s first exam to back-to-school checkups, we’re here to support your child’s visual health. Book a pediatric eye exam and take the first step toward clearer sight for your child
