IPL & Radiofrequency Dry Eye Treatment

A light- and heat-based dry eye treatment in Edmonton.

For many patients with chronic dry eye, over-the-counter eye drops and home care simply aren’t enough. If your symptoms persist despite conservative treatments, it may be time for a more advanced solution.

Our Edmonton Dry Eye Clinic offers IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and Radiofrequency (RF) therapy to address the underlying causes of dry eye disease. Delivered using our InMode platform, these non-invasive therapies help reduce inflammation, improve oil flow from the eyelid glands, and restore tear film stability.

What Is IPL & RF Therapy?

  • Intense Pulsed Light (IPL): Uses short bursts of light to target inflammation and vascular abnormalities along the eyelids. It helps reduce redness, unclog glands, and stabilize the tear film.
  • Radiofrequency (RF): Uses controlled heat to warm the tissue around the eyes. This softens hardened oils inside the meibomian glands, improves circulation, and prepares the glands for expression.

Both treatments are performed using the InMode system, which combines safety and patient comfort.

Why We Combine IPL, RF, and Meibomian Gland Expression

Dry eye is rarely the result of a single issue, which is why no single treatment works for everyone. Dr. Abdo Kattan often combines IPL, RF, and meibomian gland expression into one unified, in-office protocol that targets the condition from multiple angles. Here’s how the treatment works:

  • IPL helps reduce inflammation around the eyelids and addresses the vascular changes that contribute to meibomian gland dysfunction.

  • RF gently heats the tissue around the eyes, softening thickened oils and preparing the glands for treatment.

  • Meibomian gland expression follows immediately after, clearing the blocked glands and helping restore normal oil flow.

Most patients begin with a 4-session treatment plan, scheduled over several weeks. Throughout the process, Dr. Kattan closely monitors your progress. Adjustments are made based on how your eyes respond.

We also complement in-office care with take-home therapies, including heated eye masks, lid hygiene products, and nutritional support.

What to Expect During Treatment

Each treatment session is designed to be comfortable, and every step is clearly explained. Here’s what most patients can expect:

Mild warmth or light pressure during your RF treatment and gland expression.

Protective eye shields are worn during the IPL treatment session to ensure your safety.

Numbing eye drops are applied before gland expression to minimize discomfort.

Minimal downtime with slight redness or sensitivity for a short time after your session.

If you’ve been living with persistent dry eye symptoms and nothing seems to help, this may be the next step. Book a dry eye evaluation at Ever Square Eye Clinic's Dry Eye Clinic in Edmonton to find out if IPL and RF therapy could be the right fit for your eyes.
