What Are Scleral Contact Lenses?

Scleral lenses are large-diameter contact lenses designed to vault over the entire cornea and rest on the white part of the eye (the sclera). This design creates a fluid-filled reservoir that stays between the lens and your eye.

Scleral lenses are:

  • Custom-built for each individual eye

  • Known for improved comfort and stability

  • Often recommended for dry eye patients and those with corneal irregularities or post-surgical changes

  • Designed to reduce irritation while offering crisp vision

They require a precise fitting process, but the results can be life-changing for patients who thought they couldn’t wear contact lenses.

Other Custom Contact Lenses We Fit

Not every patient needs scleral lenses, but many still benefit from more advanced designs than standard soft lenses. Our Edmonton eye doctor also fits:

  • Toric lenses for patients with moderate to high astigmatism

  • Rigid gas-permeable (RGP) lenses for sharper vision

  • Hybrid lenses that combine an RGP centre with a soft outer skirt

  • Custom soft lenses for patients with high prescriptions or uniquely shaped eyes

Our goal is simple: to help you see clearly and comfortably, no matter how complex your vision needs may be.

Specialty lenses aren’t off-the-shelf. Every pair is custom-designed based on detailed measurements and your eye anatomy. Here’s what to expect:

  1. Contact lens exam to evaluate your vision, corneal shape, and tear film.

  2. Advanced imaging, if needed, to map your corneal surface.

  3. Trial lenses and in-office fitting to test comfort, clarity, and alignment.

  4. Follow-up visits to fine-tune your fit and ensure long-term success.

We also provide clear instructions on lens handling, cleaning, and care.

If you’ve been told you’re not a candidate for contact lenses, or you’ve struggled to wear them comfortably, we’re here to help. Book a contact lens exam at Ever Square Eye Clinic and explore our personalized options.
